THE TOP 11 INFINITI STORIES FROM 2011

1- Infiniti Embarks on a QX-Inspired Boat Project
The Infiniti QX56 full-size luxury SUV might be best known for its leather-trimmed, 7-passenger interior and technological advances like the world's first Around View Monitor, but its real claim to fame could be its powerful, 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 engine and 8,500-pound towing capacity. Now, in a unique twist on putting the cart before the horse, Infiniti has embarked on a one-off project to add QX power to what’s being towed – a boat modified around a QX engine and designed with the luxury, performance and craftsmanship of its flagship SUV.

2- Infiniti and F1 Racing, Vettel are World Champions
Infiniti Global Brand Ambassador Sebastian Vettel underlined his reputation as a true master of Inspired Performance by winning the 2011 Formula One World Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix.

3- Infiniti JX is Born
After the concept version debuted in Pebble Beach, the full prodcution version of the 2013 Infiniti JX was shown at the LA Auto Show. As a fresh, bold alternative to the many flavors of vanilla currently dominating the luxury crossover segment, the all-new Infiniti JX is designed to excel in the areas that luxury crossover buyers desire most – interior flexibility and roominess, safety, and advanced hospitality features.

4- Infiniti Poised for ZEV Growth
A highly advanced, range-extending electric sports car concept is under development at Infiniti. Set to emerge at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012, this vehicle is being created to extend the potential for high performance, low emission electric cars. Explaining the strategy behind the concept, Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and Infiniti said: "At the Geneva Show next year, we will present our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car. Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. And with an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect."

5- Infiniti M Hybrid Launches in Style
Infiniti announced its first high performance hybrid in bold style. In an ad campaign that challenged the conventional notion of what a hybrid can be, Infiniti took viewers on a journey through the history of hybrids, starting over 100 years ago with the invention of the first hybrid car in 1888, to the hybrid patent in 1909, through the hybrids of the '70s and on to hybrids today – directly challenging the notion that you can’t have great performance and great fuel economy.

6- IPL G Convertible is the Second Model to Focus on "Total Vehicle Performance"
The 2013 IPL G Convertible became the second member of the Infiniti Performance Line of premium performance vehicles. The IPL G Convertible features special aerodynamic styling pieces, the dynamic performance of an IPL-tuned V6, exhaust and suspension, 19-inch IPL aluminum-alloy wheels, and unique leather-appointed interior.

7- Infiniti ETHEREA Projects "Evoloving Infiniti Identity"
The Infiniti ETHEREA made its world debut at the 81st International Geneva Motor Show. "ETHEREA is about a new type of luxury for younger buyers," said Toru Saito, Corporate Vice President and leader of the Global Infiniti Business Unit. "It is not just a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car."

8- New Global HQ in Hong Kong Foreshadows Infiniti's Growth Around the World
Infiniti will locate its new global headquarters in Hong Kong. The move comes as Infiniti seeks to lift total global sales to 500,000 vehicles a year. Infiniti's growth strategy is expected to be driven partly by demand in China and other fast-growing Asian markets, which can be served more effectively by consolidating Infiniti's global downstream functions in Hong Kong.

9- Battle on the Nordschleife
Red Bull Racing drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber took each other on racing around the famous Nordschleife circuit in high performance Infiniti road cars. The team mates were given the keys to a 3.7-liter V6 Infiniti M37s and an Infiniti M35h – Infiniti’s most powerful car to date and the fastest accelerating production hybrid in the world. They competed for one high-speed lap around the legendary 14-mile track demonstrating truly Inspired Performance.

10- Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version
The Infiniti FX designed for Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. What began as a chat between the Red Bull Racing driver and Infiniti's Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura is Infiniti's fastest car yet and, probably, the most exclusive crossover ever made.

11- Infiniti M Hybrid's Direct Response Hybrid 3.5-liter V6 Named to Prestigious "Ward’s 10 Best Engines" List
There are hybrids and then there are hybrids. The sole hybrid powerplant to be honored by WardsAuto.com and WardsAuto World magazine in their 2012 "10 Best Engines" list happens to be the one that challenges conventional wisdom about the compatibility of performance and fuel economy – the 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid's innovative 3.5-liter V6 with Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system. "The Infiniti M hybrid is pure exhilaration in a world of uninspired hybrids, delivering the power of a luxury V8 engine with the fuel economy of a 4-cylinder," said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore.

INFINITI QX56-POWERED BOAT PROJECT UPDATE

For the students from Tennessee Technical Center-Nashville and Nashville State Community College, waiting is the hard part. Having finished their critical role in the Infiniti QX56-powered Boat Project - removing the powerful 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 from the donor Infiniti QX full-size SUV and working with instructors and Infiniti personnel to get it operational outside of the vehicle - they are anxiously looking forward to the day when they can experience the engine's full power on the water. All that's missing, it seems, is the boat.

A little over 1,000 miles away in Freeport, Maine there is indeed a boat, resting upside down in a well-heated craftsman's workshop - stripped of its engine, hardware, wiring, interior and hull planking. It is, as the students might say, not even the shell of its former self. More like the skeleton. But that's the good news. The second phase of the project is well underway.

Hot Rodding a Classic Chris-Craft

The concept of "hot rodding" - putting a newer, more powerful engine in a classic chassis - is not limited to motor vehicles alone. As much as its history can be traced, the new Infiniti QX56 V8 will be at least the fourth engine to ride between the rich mahogany wooden hull sides of the 1962 Chris-Craft "Holiday" that is serving as the body for the transplant. Previous engines have included a 431-cubic inch Lincoln plank head marine engine and a pair of 440-cubic inch Chrysler Hemi marine V8s, including one with a high-performance dual-quad carburetor set-up.

"The use of the powerful Infiniti QX56 V8 is fitting with the history of this particular craft," explained George "Dodo" Brockman, owner of Freeport Boat Outlet, who is overseeing the build of the Infiniti boat project. The Infiniti V8 is actually lighter than all of the previous powerplants and won't require any special bracing or hull modifications to fit it into the original engine bay."

After its removal from the original QX56, the engine was sent to Bracket Marine in Westbrook, Maine for a trial fitting and modification of the engine's bell housing for use with the ZF/Hurth marine transmission. The engine was then sent to a shop in Alabama for "marinization" - a process that involves fabrication of water-cooled exhaust manifolds and the adaptation of a closed cooling system. The big 5.6-liter V8's next stop will be back to its birthplace, the Infiniti engine facility in Decherd, Tennessee, where it will be run on the dynamometer to make sure its horsepower and torque are still up to factory specs. Finally, the engine will be returned to Maine for final installation in the hull. But first, a total restoration of the hull is in order.

"Before the future Infiniti lake cruiser can return to the water, we've had to tear it down to virtually nothing and start building it back up with fresh wood," said Brockman. "Once we removed the current engine and interior, we turned it upside down on a special cradle and started working on removing the hull planking to expose the inner framing. Ultimately it looks like we'll have to replace nearly 85 percent of the original wood, one piece at a time, due to age and rot. Some pieces you could put your fist right through. When it's done, however, it's going to look just like new - only better with the Infiniti engine, upholstery, audio system and other luxury components."

The other thing Brockman is quick to mention is when finished, the boat will take to the water like an Infiniti sport sedan takes to the road. "When the 20-foot Chris-Craft Holiday model was introduced in 1962, it was said to be one of the best performing Chris-Craft hulls ever produced. It cornered well, was easy to come on plane and was often used in nationally sanctioned competition water skiing events for just those reasons. We can't wait to see how this classic design performs with the new engine."

Brockman estimates that when the hull and decking restoration is complete, he and head craftsman Jimmy Martin will use more than 600 board feet of high grade sustainably harvested mahogany to cover the framework, hull, transom and deck. For the hull and deck, they start with two-inch thick boards, cut them down the middle, and then mill to half-inch planking to create book-matched pieces for each side. The inside wood, even the parts not visible to the eye, goes through a similar handcrafting process. Assembly of the new wood pieces follows the original process, only with modern bonding agents (in addition to the screws) providing improved structural integrity. Eventually 15 coats of special marine varnish will be applied over a period of 25 to 30 days.

After the wood restoration is complete, the third phase, reassembly, will begin. The plan is to reupholster the original seating with new Infiniti QX semi-aniline leather, with XM contributing a NavWeather system and Bose providing a speaker and subwoofer system similar to an Infiniti QX. A custom boat trailer, painted to match a 2012 Infiniti QX56, will also be constructed.

Lynnwood police go Christmas shopping with needy children

Lynnwood police took time last week to make some needy children’s’ Christmases a little brighter.

They gathered at the Lynnwood Target store for the seventh annual Shop With A Cop event. Each officer was paired up with a child and they headed straight for the toy aisle.

Shannon Sessions with Lynnwood police said most of the time the kids like to by things for other family members are not for themselves. The moms also received gift cards to spend.

The event benefited 27 children from YMCA Pathways for Woman. After shopping, the kids and officers ate dinner and visited with Santa.

Funding was provided by Target and Kuni Westside Infiniti.

INFINITI AND RED BULL RACING: F1 SEASON REVIEW

Supported by the inspired partnership with Infiniti, Red Bull Racing dominated the 2011 F1 season, bookending the calendar with victories and notching up poles galore and many wins in between.

On March 1, 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, Infiniti announced an exciting new partnership with Red Bull Racing. The presence on-stage of Sebastian Vettel helped attract the world’s media as the 2010 F1 World Champion and Andy Palmer, Senior Vice President of Infiniti, revealed details of the collaboration between the two companies.

Palmer explained that this would be more than a marketing exercise to help raise Infiniti's profile through the car company's connection with such a dramatic and popular global sport. There would also be a unique technical alliance between the two as Infiniti received feedback and Red Bull Racing had access to research and development facilities not normally available to a Formula One team.

"The new season starts in Australia in just over three weeks," said Vettel. "Everyone begins with zero points and we have a lot of work ahead of us. You need a strong team behind you and having Infiniti on board helps strengthen the Red Bull package. We know the competition will be very strong but we're going to give it our best shot to win the Championship again." Vettel was as good as his word.

The German driver picked up where he had left off at the end of 2010 by taking pole position and dominating the race in Melbourne - and then repeating the feat two weeks later in Malaysia.

Vettel's prediction that winning was never going to be easy proved true in China the following week, when he had to settle for second place behind McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. And proof that Vettel would have to push hard to maintain any advantage came when he crashed during practice for the fourth round in Turkey. Vettel and Red Bull were under pressure but the team responded exactly as World Champions should when the chips are down. With his rebuilt car, Vettel took pole and won the race and then claimed another victory two weeks later in Spain, despite struggling with a technical problem and being pushed all the way by Hamilton. Vettel and Red Bull were leading the Championship, but this was by no means a foregone conclusion.

Winning the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix coincided with Vettel's appointment as Infiniti's Global Ambassador, a role he was delighted to fulfill a few weeks later in Canada as he spent a day at a race track with the national media demonstrating the handling and Inspired Performance of the Infiniti range. In a series of interviews, Vettel explained that while five wins thus far may make F1 racing look easy for Red Bull, the competition was intense and the slightest mistake could cost victory. They were to be prescient words.

In one of the most dramatic races of the season thanks to intermittent rain, Vettel held the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix until a minor misjudgement on the last of 70 extremely tense laps caused him to run wide and allow McLaren's Jenson Button through to victory. It would be the only error Vettel would make during more than 1100 laps of racing in 2011.

In between his racing commitments, Vettel had been working with Infiniti's engineers and designers, culminating in the launch of the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. In that time, he had also won four more races, making it a question of 'when' rather than 'if' he would retain his title.

With perfect timing from Infiniti's point of view, Vettel became F1 World Champion for the second time by finishing third at Suzuka in Japan. Within hours of the celebration finishing, the double World Champion, accompanied by Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner and Technical Director Adrian Newey, were on their way to Infiniti's global headquarters in Yokohama.

After studying what Newey referred to as "the interesting and useful engineering exchange between the motor industry and F1", followed by a press conference to the world's media, the Red Bull Racing party got a true taste of Japan's passion for motor sport.

Gathering in the main hall where Sebastian would make his public appearance were more than 3,000 screaming, Vettel finger-wielding fans anxious to catch a glimpse of F1's man of the moment. Many had camped outside the night before to ensure they got a good spot as soon as Infiniti opened its doors, and when the new double World Champion emerged and greeted them on stage, they weren't disappointed.

Then it was back to business, Vettel and Red Bull showing no let-up by winning in Korea. It was a fitting result at the end of a weekend when Infiniti and Red Bull Racing announced a deepening of their multi-year partnership.

From 2012, Infiniti branding will feature more prominently on Red Bull Racing's car with enhanced logos on the side of the chassis and the top of the cockpit. The Infiniti name and logo will also be displayed on new areas of the drivers' overalls, as well as on team equipment. This accelerated program, just seven months after the original partnership was announced, underlined Infiniti's shared vision with Red Bull Racing.

Vettel did not win the last race of the season in Brazil but another Inspired Performance by Red Bull Racing still ensured a brilliant 1-2 finish for the team, with Mark Webber claiming his maiden win of the season and his team-mate in second. Vettel had claimed pole position to set yet another benchmark, his 15th pole in a season beating the previous record established as long ago as 1992. Once again, he stormed into the lead and looked to be on course for victory until a rare mechanical problem struck his Red Bull before the race had reached quarter distance.

The technicians in the garage, monitoring every detail of the Red Bull's performance thanks to more than 100 sensors buried deep within the car, were alarmed to note that the gearbox was consuming more oil than it should. A radio message went out to Vettel urging him to change gear early, particularly when leaving the slower corners where the biggest strain is placed on the transmission.

In a sport as competitive as F1, a mechanical handicap such as this should have meant the loss of a number of places. Yet Vettel somehow managed to cope with the problem and lost just one place -- to his Red Bull team-mate, Mark Webber going on to take his first win of 2011.

It was the perfect way to wrap up the season, the one- two finish meaning that Red Bull Racing had won 12 of the season's 19 Grand Prix events to make it 24 wins in the last 41 races -- an extraordinary record of consistency and speed.

It was a truly Inspired Performance, from the start of the season in Australia to the very last lap in Brazil.

HOME RUN DONE!

Approximately 60,000 spectators turned out in Milton Keynes last Saturday to see Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel and seven-times GP winner Mark Webber drive their Red Bull Racing cars on the city's streets. The duo were joined by Team Principal Christian Horner, who had just returned from the FIA Awards in India with Mark and Seb, and Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey.

As the team celebrated its double World Champion success, they were joined by David Coulthard, who drove a NASCAR, Red Bull stunt rider Chris Pfeiffer and F1 presenter Jake Humphrey. Starting at 1230hrs and concluding at 1500hrs, the Red Bull Racing Home Run event was arranged to say thank you to Red Bull Racing's staff and their families and the local community.

After the event Mark Webber commented: "It was something special to drive the car in Milton Keynes today in front of all the fans. The location was close to the factory and I live pretty locally too, so it was nice to give something back to the community. I know some of the roundabouts on the course from driving my road car, so it was something different to drive them in an F1 car! It was a nice atmosphere, the sun was shining and it was good for everyone to get close to the cars. It's a great thing that Red Bull has done to say thank you to the fans."

Sebastian Vettel added: "It's great to be here in Milton Keynes which is where the cars are built and everyone from the factory works. It's nice to say thank you and to see all the fans from the area. It was good fun; we did some donuts and enjoyed ourselves out there. Thanks to all the fans that came today, we wanted to put on a great show, so I hope they enjoyed it. It’s a great way to finish the season."

Christian Horner said: "To run an F1 car through the middle of Milton Keynes was fantastic, so many of our workforce are local and it's great to see so many fans here. It's flattering to have so many people turn out to celebrate what we have achieved. Without the fans, there's no Formula One and no Red Bull, so it's good to give something back and celebrate our double World Championship like this. I would like to say a huge thank you to Milton Keynes Council for what they have done for us. Closing the middle of the city on one if their busiest shopping days is highly appreciated, so a huge thank you to them for all their efforts."

INFINITI AND RED BULL RACING BRING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING PERORMANCE TO THE CITY STREETS

Tens of thousands of Formula One fans were treated to an unforgettable display of inspired performance on Saturday, as Infiniti and Red Bull Racing took to the streets with an exclusive live demonstration.

Taking place in Red Bull Racing's home city of Milton Keynes in the UK, F1 drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber wowed approximately 60,000 spectators by driving the World Championship-winning Red Bull Formula One cars along the city streets, condoned off especially for this historical event. Amongst the roar of engines and clouds of tyre smoke, Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner and Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey were also there to meet and greet fans.

As a major partner of Red Bull Racing, Infiniti was central to the show, with both Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel completing hero laps and waving to the crowd aboard two Infiniti G Convertibles. Each of the drivers arrived at the event in an Infiniti M35h, the world's fastest-accelerating hybrid, whilst fans had the chance to get up close to Infiniti's range of cars with a large product display next to the course. This display included a rare chance to see the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version concept, along with an Infiniti FX30ds specially branded in RB7 livery which was also used as the official pace car for the F1 runs.

The event marks the end of a strong first year for the Infiniti and Red Bull Racing partnership, resulting in both the Drivers' and Constructors' World Championships. It has also seen Sebastian Vettel sign as the luxury car maker's Global Brand Ambassador and the subsequent development of the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Version, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Commenting on the event, Wayne Bruce, Communications Director, Infiniti Europe said: "Today has been a truly fitting end to a remarkable first F1 season for Infiniti and we are delighted to have been able to support Red Bull Racing on the event.

It's phenomenal to see so many fans of the sport attend the demonstration, and judging from the hero laps and our own car display, it appears Infiniti has come away with a lot of new fans of our own."

MARK AND SEBASTIAN CONFIRMED FOR UK DECEMBER EVENT

Red Bull Racing is pleased to confirm that World Champion Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Christian Horner and Adrian Newey will attend the team's celebration show run event in Milton Keynes on Saturday 10 December.

In collaboration with Milton Keynes Council, Red Bull Racing has organised the event to celebrate their achievements this year and mark their double Championship success for a second successive season.

The show will take place along the full length of Midsummer Boulevard in Milton Keynes, between Centre MK (Saxon Gate) and MK Station (Grafton Gate) and feature two Red Bull Racing Formula One cars, driven by Mark and Sebastian.

Red Bull Racing Team Principal, Christian Horner commented: "It's great news to be able to go ahead with this event in Milton Keynes with both drivers and two cars. It's been home for our factory since Red Bull entered Formula One in 2005 and we get excellent support from the city; it will be fantastic to be able to put on a show and give something back. I think most of the staff will be attending with their families, which I'm extremely pleased about. I'd like to thank the council for all their efforts and I'm looking forward to the event - it will be the first time we'll have two cars and both of our drivers at a running show car event, so it will be a great way to finish the year."

Milton Keynes Council Leader Andrew Geary said: "Our warm congratulations go out to the whole team at Tilbrook in Milton Keynes. The city benefits enormously from having Red Bull Racing based here - it shines a massive spotlight on the city, bringing in tourism, investment and providing hundreds of jobs locally, ensuring that MK is firmly on the map. It's fantastic that both drivers are confirmed for the event."

Infiniti to use Mercedes A-Class platform for compact front-driver

A partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti has been discussed before, and now, Car and Driver has some new details about what exactly could come from an agreement between the two automakers.

Infiniti will reportedly borrow the new A-Class platform to build its own entry-level luxury hatch, possibly a production version of the Etherea concept (pictured) that we first saw in Geneva earlier this year. C/D asked Nissan VP Andy Palmer why Infiniti would borrow Benz tech when the automaker already had a host of capable Nissan and Renault parts, and the exec explained that it's all about luxury, adding that the hatchback "will need much better torsional rigidity, much better NVH than you would put into a mass brand." We can live with that answer.

Infiniti claims that the compact hatch will feature its own version of the A-Class platform, with engineering that will set it apart from the Mercedes. We're likely to receive a gas engine Stateside, but the European version will likely be powered by diesel fuel. Infiniti still hasn't released timing for its new compact hatch, though we'd guess that something will come to fruition within the next year or so.

It comes as little surprise that seven of the ten engines on the list feature the most recent advance in power and efficiency, namely direct injection, or that a full half of them are boosted with the addition of either a supercharger or a turbocharger. Perhaps more surprising is that there's only one hybrid powertrain on the list, and it's from Infiniti, not Toyota or Lexus.

In fact, there isn't a single engine from Honda or Toyota on 2011's edition of the 10 Best Engines, nor are the 1.4-liter/111kW electric motor package in the Chevrolet Volt or 80kW AC motor in the Nissan Leaf anywhere to be found - both of which were on the list in 2010. Also missing? A diesel... any diesel - and there certainly are a few options from the likes of Audi,BMW, Mercedes-Bez and VW from which to choose.

Though its neither direct-injected nor turbocharged, the Pentaster V6 from Chrysler is surely worthy of inclusion, if for no other reason than its single-handed ability to transform any vehicle it's in from an also-ran to a competitive proposition.

We'll also give a shout-out to Ford, which earned two spots on the list but could seemingly have garnered another for the excellent 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine in the F-150. Ward's has plenty of commentary on why each engine was chosen.  Here is some of what was said about the engine on the 2012 Infiniti M35h.

"The Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system in the M35h replaces the torque converter in the 7-speed automatic transmission with a single 50-kW (67 hp) electric motor linked to a powerful lithium-ion battery pack that allows frequent decoupling of the engine so the vehicle can run in electric mode at speeds above 70 mph (113 km/h) and easily achieve 30 mpg (7.8 L/100 km), based on WardsAuto testing.

Although pricey, the M35h trumps German luxury hybrid sedans that cost much more."

INFINITI TAKES ITS EUROPEAN CUSTOMERS BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT RED BULL RACING

  • Celebrating the crowning of Infiniti FX driver, Sebastian Vettel, as double Formula One World champion.
  • Order an Infiniti FX and receive a money-can't-buy, backstage tour of Red Bull Racing's UK factory.
  • Just 10 places available for UK customers.
  • Available Red Bull Racing graphic wrap tailored to fit the FX.
Infiniti is offering a rare chance to get behind the scenes at the Red Bull Racing factory as the luxury performance automotive brand celebrates the crowning of one of its most famous, and now fastest owners, Sebastian Vettel as double Formula One World Champion. And for the true enthusiast and FX owner in Europe, Infiniti has introduced a specially commissioned wrap for the car inspired by the Red Bull Racing livery.

The Infiniti FX World Champion Experience will be offered to just few customers in Europe who order an Infiniti FX. This unique opportunity applies to any one of the nine strong range of diesel and petrol engined performance crossovers available in Europe - not just Sebastian's FX of choice which is, inevitably, the 390PS FX50S Premium.

These few lucky people will be invited to Red Bull Racing's HQ in Milton Keynes, UK, early next year where a member of the team will take them on a behind-the-scenes tour unavailable to the public. For motorsport fans, it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. January will be a great time to visit, too, because Red Bull Racing will be in full preparation for the 2012 Season. Infiniti's chosen customers will see the car-making in action throughout the three main areas of the factory: design, production and assembly. Lunch will be served from the 'race space balcony' giving the ultimate view of the factory floor. And at the end of their special day, each customer will be given a genuine piece of a Red Bull Racing car to take home.

This is a money-can't-buy experience. However the Infiniti FX is available to order now through any of Infiniti's Centres. The Red Bull Racing FX wrap is available as a no cost option to any World Champion Experience participants.

Three new safety technologies that will be comming to new Infiniti cars!

In the last few years, Infiniti has been offering a range of enhanced active safety features on the Infiniti G, Infiniti M, Infiniti Ex, Infiniti FX, and Infiniti QX models.

This week in Japan, Infiniti demonstrated three new safety technologies that are bound for New Infiniti Cars in the next few years, two of which are sure to be copied by other automakers in short order.

Rear Camera Multi-Sensing System
The Around View Monitor, Blind Spot And Lane Departure warning have all been available from Infiniti in the past. But the newest addition to this safety suite is Moving Object Detection, due to arrive in April on the all new 2013 Infiniti JX. Utilizing the rear view camera and a new image processing system, when the vehicle is put into reverse, it can detect objects and people, highlighting them with a red box and alerting the driver of their presence with both an audible alert and dashboard warning - lessening the chance that little Jimmy gets run over while his intensive mother is backing out of the driveway. The 2013 Infiniti JX will also have a backup backup intervention system.  We will tell you more about that system at another time.

Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication
Drivers often mistake the accelerator for the brake. Infiniti's new Acceleration Suppression system is designed to eliminate this issue, at least when it comes to parking maneuvers.

By using the Around View cameras mounted in the bottom of the exterior mirrors, the system can detect when a driver is pulling into a parking space by recognizing the lines painted on the pavement. Coupled with a front-sensing radar unit to detect a wall or other stationary object, the system will recognize the driver unintentionally mashing the gas and automatically apply the brakes. We tested the system out on several occasions and it worked every single time.

Predictive Forward Collision Warning System
Adaptive Cruise Control has been around for over a decade, but one issue with the system is that it just keeps track of the vehicle ahead. Infiniti's Predictive Warning system takes the concept to the next level.

Using the same radar-based sensor mounted in the front bumper, the system detects the second vehicle ahead by extending the radar's range underneath the vehicle directly in front. If that vehicle doesn't brake in time the system alerts the driver with an audible warning, and when the driver directly ahead swerves out of the way, both an audible and visual warning alerts the driver of an impending collision and pretensions the seat belts. While Predictive Forward Collision doesn't brake for the driver, linking the ABS wouldn't be difficult. And before you ask, the system can still detect the second vehicle in line, even if the Civic directly in front suffers from a terminally low stance.

Engineers wouldn't give us a firm production date for the system, but it's safe to assume that the refreshed Infiniti line-up will benefit from the tech within the next few years.

VETTEL SETS NEW DRIVER RECORD FOR MOST POLES IN ONE SEASON: 15 QUALIFYING

Car 1 SEBASTIAN VETTEL, Position: POLE POSITION, (3rd Practice - P1, 1:12.460)

"It's pretty special to get the record. Nigel obviously took three or four races less to achieve it, but nevertheless it's been an incredible year for us and an incredible journey and it's not yet over, we've got another chapter tomorrow and I'm very happy. It's hard to believe. I didn't feel that happy yesterday, but this morning I was much happier with the car and how it felt, it was much more to my liking and I was able to go from there and improve to get the pole. You know what you can do and the time you should be able to get ahead of the lap, but when you cross the line - you know if you have done it or not, without looking at the time. There wasn't much left today and that gives extreme satisfaction - and it gets even better when the engineer comes on the radio and tells you you've done it."

Car 2 MARK WEBBER, Position: 2nd, (3rd Practice - P3, 1:12.597)
"Qualifying was a good effort today from the whole team. It was very close with Sebastian, he did a great lap again, but there wasn't much between us. It was a good session today and we know there's going to be some weather coming in, which will mix things up a bit. That's very good for the people at home watching on TV, but it means a few grey hairs for us sitting in the cockpit. I̢۪m looking forward to the race, it's a good challenge here and it would be great to finish the season with a good result."

CHRISTIAN HORNER:

"An awesome achievement by Sebastian and the team today. It's a new record in Formula One, which is a small piece of history for Sebastian and is thoroughly deserved. He shared the record with Nigel for two weeks and he now has some fairly illustrious names behind him, so a great performance. A great performance also from Mark Webber today to lock out the front row ahead of what I'm sure will be a really exciting final Grand Prix of 2011."

(Renault) CYRIL DUMONT:
"So another record today for Sebastian with fifteen pole positions. He broke the last record from Mansell, which is fantastic. It's also fantastic for Mark to lock out the front row and for the team to finish it's Saturday season with a one-two - it reflects the performance of the car, which was been amazing. I hope that tomorrow we will transform it into a strong finish, it would be great to finish the season with a one-two."

Infiniti and Red Bull Racing: Brazilian Grand Prix Preview

"Brazil is one of the best races of the year. it’s a track which reminds me of brands Hatch and the Formula Ford racing there because it’s a like a bowl in terms of the atmosphere. The Brazilian people love their motorsport and are extremely passionate about it, obviously off the back of Piquet, Senna, Fittipaldi and Rubens - they’ve had some really great drivers. There are nice memories for me from Brazil. I’ve always done well there so i hope i can get a nice result, it would be a great way to end the season with a good last race.”
MARK

“Brazil is going to be exciting because Interlagos is known for its passionate fans, anti-clockwise driving and the extreme altitude of the track. Sao Paulo is about 1000 metres above sea level, which costs us some power. The long left corners are a strain on our neck muscles because the track is anti-clockwise, which is opposite to normal. That’s why i usually do some special training before Sao Paulo to get my muscles used to it. One of the best overtaking places is in the first chicane, the so-called Senna S. it’s perfect for braking as you can drive in the slipstream of the car in front, to be able to pass. One important thing is, if it rains, which is certainly possible in Sao Paulo, aquaplaning can be extreme here.”

2013 IPL G Convertible Joins Infiniti Performance Line Portfolio with Dramatic Styling, Tuned 3.7-liter V6

The 2013 IPL G Convertible Infiniti, which is set to go on sale in spring 2012, becomes the second member of the Infiniti Performance Line of premium performance vehicles. First introduced with the dramatic IPL G Coupe, IPL's product design philosophy focuses on "total vehicle performance," including unique driving attributes and exclusive exterior and interior features at a highly attractive price point. The new IPL G Convertible features special aerodynamic styling pieces, the dynamic performance of an IPL-tuned V6, exhaust and suspension, 19-inch IPL aluminum-alloy wheels, and unique leather-appointed interior - along with the G Convertible's three-piece retractable hardtop.

"The Infiniti Performance Line, as demonstrated by our first offering, the IPL G Coupe, challenges the concept of ultra-high cost sports series. IPL pushes the premium performance envelope for buyers seeking a higher level of exclusivity and driving exhilaration, but does so with an Infiniti twist," said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. "Like every Infiniti, the new IPL G Convertible takes a different path from its established competitors, with its retractable hardtop that is designed to look as good with the top up as down. It’s a terrific addition to the Infiniti Performance Line, taking the dramatic Infiniti G Convertible to an even higher level."

Based on the premium foundation of the Infiniti G37 Convertible, the IPL G Convertible features an advanced VQ37VHR 3.7-liter V6. The engine management system has been recalibrated through air-fuel mixture and ignition timing optimization, raising the maximum horsepower output point to 7,400 rpm. To obtain a natural acceleration feel, the torque curve from low revs to the maximum torque point (5,200 rpm) was tuned for linearity. The IPL-tuned high-flow exhaust is a full dual exhaust design with independent left and right large diameter pipes. The muffler's inner structure and materials have been maximized to reduce pressure and provide an appropriate performance exhaust note. The result is a 30% reduction in exhaust pressure versus a base G Convertible's Y-pipe exhaust system design.

As a result of both the exhaust system and engine management changes, the IPL G Convertible generates 343 horsepower - an increase of 18 horsepower over the non-IPL models - and 273lb-ft of torque (+6 lb-ft).

The engine is matched to an electronically controlled 7-speed automatic transmission with Downshift Rev Matching and quick-shift Drive Sport (DS) mode with magnesium paddle shifters and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC).

The IPL G Convertible's enhanced dynamic vehicle performance focuses on providing confident handling, flat ride and smooth ride comfort. The IPL suspension tuning and damping management philosophy is designed to optimize each aspect of the suspension, effectively connecting the driver to the road surface while minimizing uncomfortable vibrations. Front spring rates have been increase 14% over the G Convertible Sport model and rear spring rates increased 4%. Front stabilizer spring rates have been increased 6% over the G Convertible Sport model and rear stabilizer spring rates increased 125%. Shock tuning has also been adjusted and incorporates an all-new HF-type shock.

The IPL G Convertible also offers a sport-tuned steering gear and large 4-wheel sport brakes (14-inch front, 13.8-inch rear) with aluminum-alloy opposed calipers (4-piston front/2-piston rear).

The IPL G Convertible's unique exterior includes a dramatic front bumper/fascia design with integrated fog lights and black finishers, sculpted side sills and round chrome exhaust tips. Each part is shaped to complement the G Convertible’s elegantly seductive styling. Combined with the exclusive 19-inch IPL split 7-spoke graphite-finish wheels and low-profile W-rated Bridgestone Potenza RE050A performance tires, the IPL G Convertible embraces a road-ready attitude. The IPL G Convertible is offered in just two exterior colors: Moonlight White and Malbec Black.

The IPL G Convertible interior harmonizes with the exterior styling, offering two color treatments - Stone and IPL-exclusive Monaco Red. All IPL G Convertible interiors include red-stitched leather-appointed Climate-controlled front sport seats with embroidered IPL logos, manual thigh extension and driver's power torso and thigh support adjustment, red-stitched steering wheel, Silk Obi aluminum trim, IPL embroidered front floor mats, and aluminum trimmed pedals and footrest.

Other standard IPL G Convertible interior features includes a 13-speaker Bose Open Air Sound System, optimized for both top positions, with AudioPilot 2.0 noise compensation technology and Personal front seat headrest speakers, an Adaptive Dual Zone Climate Control that automatically adjusts fan speed and air volume based on top position, and Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) with Plasmacluster air purifier, Infiniti Navigation System with voice recognition and available XM NavTraffic Real-Time Traffic Information, NavWeather with Real-Time Weather and 3-day forecast (XM subscription required, sold separately), Streaming Audio via Bluetooth and Zagat Survey Restaurant Guide and touch screen, and Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System.

Technological and convenience features include standard Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, Remote Keyless Entry system, a power tilt/telescoping steering column with increased travel, illuminated glove compartment and automatic temperature control. Also standard is XM Satellite Radio (XM subscription required, sold separately) and Rear Sonar System.

An Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and occupant classification sensor is standard, along with door-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags, front-seat mounted side-impact supplemental air bags and front seat Active Head Restraints. The rear seat includes fixed head rests with rear Pop-up Roll Bars. The G Convertible also features reinforced front side members, front pillars and body sills.

"With it's pure IPL style and performance, and the added dimension of open-air motoring, the IPL G Convertible is a welcome addition to the Infiniti Performance Line lineup,'" added Poore. "Watch for more models joining the IPL lineup in the future."

The 2013 IPL G Coupe is offered in one fully equipped model, the IPL G Convertible with 7-speed automatic transmission. There are no options.
