Nissan to Provide NV200 Vanettes to Earthquake-affected Areas in Japan

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will loan 10 units of its compact commercial vehicle, the NV200 Vanette Taxi, at no cost to several taxi operators in the Tohoku region of Japan to help improve public access to transportation in the areas affected by the recent major earthquake and natural disasters.

The taxi companies have been designated for this role by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) in association with the "Utilization and demonstration project of new barrier-free vehicles in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake."

The project is part of efforts to develop and promote new types of barrier-free vehicles, including the Universal Design Taxi and will be launched in areas devastated by the recent natural disasters. It is aimed at ensuring access and improving public access to transportation in the affected areas and to confirm the attributes of the new barrier-free vehicles. The NV200 Vanette Taxis will be delivered to the affected areas in the fall of this year.

"We are proud to support the MLIT project by providing Nissan's NV200 Vanette Taxis," said Nissan Corporate Vice President Hideto Murakami, who is responsible for the Global LCV Business Unit. "Our hope is that they will be used to help people in the affected area and, as we go forward, lead to widespread adoption of the Universal Design Taxi nationwide."

Already on sale in Japan from the end of 2010 and having received a warm reception, the NV200 Vanette Taxi is an innovative and functional taxi for everyone, regardless of age, gender and ability, including children, elderly people and wheelchair users. The NV200 is aimed at promoting a barrier-free public transportation infrastructure. With its spacious rear seating and many features that facilitate smooth egress/ingress and comfortable driving over long periods, it was awarded the "Universal Design Award" *1 -- one of the most coveted awards in universal design -- and the "Universal Design Consumer's Favorite Award" in March 2011, marking the first time in the automotive industry that one vehicle was awarded both accolades.

The NV200 Vanette, which is the base model of the NV200 Vanatte Taxi, was chosen in May 2011 as the next-generation taxi for New York city. It is a model designed for customers around the world as Nissan's next-generation compact commercial vehicle, suited for a wide variety of situations including business, daily use, or leisure.

The NV200 Vanette is sold in approximately 40 countries throughout the world, and has received positive feedback from customers for its spacious interior, fuel economy, excellent driving performance, and attractive design. Following its release in Japan and Europe in fiscal 2009, and in China and Singapore in fiscal 2010, it will be introduced in the U.S. and India in the future. At the end of 2009 it was awarded the "International Van of the Year 2010" award after being selected by journalists from 20 European countries.

Nissan plans to launch an electric vehicle based on the NV200 in the future. The Japan Post Service Co., Ltd., headquartered in Tokyo, has been carrying out tests on an electric vehicle based on the NV200 since July. One test vehicle has been provided to carry out postal collection and delivery tasks for approximately two months in the city of Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture, to evaluate the vehicle's capabilities under a customer's normal use conditions. Going forward, similar proving tests will be carried out both in Japan and Europe, where comparable evaluations will be implemented in cooperation with local companies.

*1 Universal Design GMbH is an award giving body dedicated to promoting the convergence of design and the emerging importance of customer needs. Representing the design challenges in the coming decades, the awards are intended to serve as an inspiration to designers and manufacturers in using their creativity, competence and experience to flow into products, architecture and services for everyone.

Infiniti Service Scheduling Proves Popular

Most service consultants would love to spend less time on the telephone setting appointments and more time with clients building satisfaction and loyalty. Infiniti has helped make that happen with ISES, freeing service consultants from telephone duties and giving clients the flexibility and convenience they desire.

"People love it," says Randy Jones, parts and service director for Infiniti of Tustin in Tustin, California. "We do nearly 100% of our service business by appointment and clients love the way online scheduling works."

Several encouraging trends suggest the system is having its desired effect. As clients embrace ISES, Infiniti statistics show that service consultant call volume decreases.

Since its launch in the summer of 2010, more than 150 retailers have either adopted the system or are enrolled to add it in coming months.

Service consultants report more uninterrupted time consulting with clients because they are no longer tethered to phones, booking appointments.

"ISES helps create the luxury experience our clients expect," Griffin says. "If your doctor was constantly interrupted by phone calls, you probably wouldn't consider it a great experience. It's the same thing in the service department. People want to interact with their service consultant without a series of phone calls."

Service consultants at participating retailers report having more time to spend with clients in the service drive. They also have more time for follow-up, which is shown to boost satisfaction and loyalty.

Infiniti statistics say that telephone hold time at retailers without an online appointment option can reach 5 minutes or more. In addition, about 20% of service calls go unanswered during the day. The new online service combats both of those issues.

"Many clients expect to have the online option," Griffin says. "After all, when was the last time you called an airline to reserve a ticket? People expect to be able to be able to log on 24 hours a day to reserve a service."

ISES liberates service personnel from all aspects of appointment setting. The system generates appointment confirmations and can provide reminders via Web, e-mail, and text. It also manages a department’s appointment schedule to avoid overbooking.

Griffin says retailers can look for additional online services rolling out to help continually improve Infiniti customer retention and satisfaction.

Infiniti Announces 2013 IPL G Convertible

Infiniti today announced that it will double its Infiniti Performance Line lineup of premium performance vehicles in spring 2012 with the addition of a new 2013 IPL G Convertible. More than just focusing on engine power and acceleration, the Infiniti Performance Line, or IPL, product design philosophy focuses on “total vehicle performance,” including unique driving attributes and exclusive exterior and interior features at highly attractive price points.

The IPL G Convertible announcement was made by Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where the IPL G Convertible Concept is currently on display. The IPL G Convertible Concept features unique aerodynamic styling, the dynamic performance of an IPL-tuned V6, exhaust and suspension, 19-inch IPL aluminum-alloy wheels, three-piece retractable hardtop and a unique red leather-appointed interior set against a Malbec Black exterior - a level of equipment and performance modification expected to be shared with the production IPL G Convertible.

"The Infiniti Performance Line, as demonstrated by our first offering, the IPL G Coupe, challenges the concept of an ultra-high cost sports series. IPL pushes the premium performance envelope for buyers seeking a higher level of exclusivity and driving exhilaration, but does so with an Infiniti twist," said Poore. "The IPL G Convertible will deliver the goods, just like the current IPL G Coupe does. Plus, the new IPL G Convertible offers the added pleasure of open-air motoring."

The new IPL G Convertible is based on the foundation of the Infiniti G37 Convertible, which features an advanced 3.7-liter V6 and three-piece power retractable hardtop that's designed to look as good with the top up as it does down.

"Like every Infiniti, the new IPL G Convertible will take a different path from its established competitors," added Poore. "It's a terrific addition to the Infiniti Performance Line, taking the dramatic Infiniti G Convertible to an even higher level."

Additional information on the 2013 IPL G Convertible will be available during the production version debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Infiniti JX Concept Makes World Debut at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

The Infiniti JX Concept, a preview of an innovative new 7-passenger/3-row luxury crossover that joins the Infiniti lineup in spring 2012, made its world debut today at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The JX Concept was unveiled by Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura prior to its display throughout the weekend’s activities at the famed Lodge at Pebble Beach.

"The JX Concept advances the Infiniti design language, sharing design cues of the Infiniti Essence concept, yet interprets those elements in ways suitable to the needs of a family luxury crossover," said Nakamura. "From the dramatic front grille and headlight design to the crescent-cut D-pillar and greenhouse shape, the JX Concept shines as a fresh, bold alternative to the many flavors of vanilla currently dominating the three-row luxury crossover segment."

Beyond its stunning exterior, the new Infiniti JX Concept is designed to excel in three areas where luxury crossover buyers put an emphasis - interior flexibility and roominess, safety, and innovative hospitality features.

"The three-row luxury crossover segment is one of the fastest growing among all luxury vehicle segments, providing a huge opportunity for Infiniti," explained Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. "And like every segment Infiniti enters, we plan to shake up the status quo - with a vehicle that is guaranteed to instantly become the new benchmark for style, hospitality, roominess, advanced telematics and safety technologies."

In the interior, for example, the production Infiniti JX will offer what is expected to be class-leading roominess, along with a 2nd row seat design that tilts and slides forward providing exceptionally easy 3rd row access.

"With the JX, you will even be able to leave a child seat latched to the 2nd row while getting in or out of the 3rd row - just one example of the vehicle's inspired flexibility and versatility," added Poore. "The 3rd row isn't the typical penalty box either, with adult-sized room for all occupants and five-and-a-half inches of 2nd row forward-back adjustability."

The Infiniti JX continues Infiniti's tradition of developing world’s first technologies, offering the currently available Blind Spot Intervention and adding a new feature, Backup Collision Intervention. With this technology, when the transmission is in reverse, the JX will help the driver detect crossing objects behind the vehicle and, if necessary, the system will automatically engage the brakes to help avoid a collision.

The Infiniti JX will also offer technologies designed to make owners lives a bit easier and more efficient, such as a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround sound system with Waveguide bass technology and an advanced Infiniti Connection Telematics system that can automatically synch the owner's calendar and provide navigation guidance to appointments. It will also feature the Infiniti Personal Assistant, Infiniti's new personal concierge service with 24-hour access to a live team of professional assistants. The Infiniti Personal Assistant benefit is now offered free-of-charge with every 2012 Infiniti vehicle purchase.

And, in keeping with Infiniti’s "Inspired Performance," the Infiniti JX will offer a balance of driving exhilaration and fuel efficiency through a combination of a powerful V6 engine and all-wheel or front-wheel drive. The Infiniti JX will also be the first Infiniti to utilize a sport-tuned, but fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission. The CVT will mimic a step transmission when the Sport mode of the Infiniti drive selector is engaged. Additional information regarding the drivetrain and other systems will be provided at the debut of the production version of the all-new Infiniti JX at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011.

"As a premium crossover with a real 3rd row - along with Infiniti levels of hospitality and driving pleasure, the new JX is another breakthrough design from the brand that has been breaking new ground for more than 20 years," Nakamura added. "We will continue to challenge conventional thinking."

Electric-driven Intelligent Brake System

M35h's braking system generates energy

The Infiniti Electric-driven Intelligent Brake system - or regenerative braking - converts the rotational energy of the drive wheels to electric power that recharges the lithium-ion battery.

In a conventional braking system, the energy of the turning wheels becomes wasted heat when the brake pads clamp against the rotors. Regenerative braking converts the rotational energy to electric power, "regenerating" the energy and recharging the battery.

When Infiniti M Hybrid is coasting or decelerating, the regenerative brake system recovers kinetic energy from the rotational force of the drive-wheels, which also turns the electric motor. The gasoline engine is disengaged, eliminating engine friction. The electric motor becomes a generator that converts the rotational energy to electricity that is used to charge the lithium-ion battery.

In city driving, about 50%-60% of brake energy is generally recaptured. The electric motor also generates braking force to help slow the vehicle - similar to the compression braking provided by an internal combustion engine. Regenerative braking works together with the friction brakes to help create outstanding stopping power.

Infiniti System Competitive Advantages

Infiniti’s Electric-driven Intelligent Brake System uses an electric booster to help generate braking force - a world first. Competitors use a reserve pressure tank and unique regenerative brake components to provide brake pressure. The Infiniti system is simpler, lighter, less costly, and more compact. Furthermore, the Infiniti M Hybrid regenerative braking range is greater than that of competitors.

Infiniti JX shows its fourth corner

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is just over one week away, and as part of the festivities, Infiniti will be taking the wraps off of its seven-passenger JX crossover. Thing is, after looking through all of the teaser images, there isn't much left to hide, save, of course, the interior. Here, the JX shows off the one part of its exterior we hadn't yet seen - the passenger-side front three-quarter. We'll still stand by our earlier judgments and say that this thing is shaping up to be substantially more attractive than the big QX, but we'll wait until we see the real deal at Pebble Beach before making our final assessments.

2012 Infiniti FX gets new fascia, small bump in price

2012 Infiniti FX35 Limited Edition

Come October of 2011, there will be a revised version of the Infiniti FX available at your local dealership. For 2012, Nissan's luxury arm has bestowed its flashy crossover with a distinctive new front fascia that draws clear influence from Infiniti's latest design language first seen on the Infiniti Essence Concept from the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

In addition to the new face, Infiniti has also added a new 20-inch wheel design and a slightly redone instrument cluster. Finally, a new FX35 Limited Edition model hits the ground wearing an exclusive Iridium Blue exterior color along with blacked-out exterior finishes and unique 21-inch wheels. If you want one, we suggest you act fast; Infiniti plans only 550 LE models for North America.

Infiniti has left the powertrain alone for 2012, not that any changes were really all that necessary. The FX35 continues on with 303-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 while the FX50 boasts 390 horses from its 5.0-liter V8. Either engine comes mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox that gets optional paddle shifters on the FX50. All-wheel drive is optional on the FX35 (base models get rear-wheel drive) and standard on the FX50.

Pricing doesn't change much for 2012, with the base FX35 starting at $43,450 and the FX50 at $59,350. The new Limited Edition FX35, which comes only with all-wheel drive, will go for $51,550. According to the automaker, "popularly equipped" models wear the same price tags in 2012 as they did in 2011.

Rumor: Infiniti working on a rebadged Nissan GT-R

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn addressed rumors of an Infiniti-badged GT-R, saying that while there's no need to build one, it has the capabilities to create it. There is an appeal to the concept of an Infiniti-badged GT-R even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. Many enthusiasts would want it to bear the GT-R's lines, scoops, and creases but some would prefer a coupe body similar to an Aston Martin.

In an interview with CAR Magazine, Ghosn said that there's currently no plan to do it. This statement may put the persistent rumors to rest; however, it won't stop a fan from wishing that Nissan should build a new performance car for its luxury division.

Ghosn's admission that this project is technically feasible gives hope to enthusiasts that there will soon be a sleek incarnation of the 2009 Essence concept with all-wheel drive and a powerful twin-turbocharged V6 that will be riding on nitrogen-filled tires.
