INFINITI WING: A unique innovation in the world of sailing

The world renown Japanese premium automotive brand has always been a committed fan of technical innovations, not only in the automotive sector but in the field of racing sports, as well. In addition to its participation in Formula One, one of the most refined technical sports, this season, Infiniti keeps focusing on other promising opportunities, too. The company now supports a world-leading Hungarian innovation.

As innovative ideas Infiniti comes up with on land, as unique project captain Géza Soponyai has started recently. Leaving out the traditional sails, he created a rigid wing similar to that used in aircrafts. This theory has already applied in big US sailing competitions; however the key idea behind the Hungarian innovation is that the wing is collapsible and can be mounted to any mast.

"The traditional sails have reached their performance limits, so sailboats cannot be driven any faster. Sail is like a wing, where lifting force is generated. This gave birth to the idea to study how aircrafts fly, and utilize this knowledge in sailing, as well. There has been no such initiative in Hungary yet,” Géza Soponyai said.

The Hungarian innovation matches perfectly to the motto of Infiniti: "inspired performance.” The key benefit of wings is that they do not become distorted, transmit higher pulling force, while the boat tilts less, so keel can be designed lighter. This all result in excellent boat acceleration. Rigid wings were earlier fixed to the mast, which was quite expensive and made storage very complicated. As a world’s first solution, the Hungarian experts eliminated these drawbacks.

"We pay extremely high attention to support pioneering ideas, no matter what sport these come up in. This wing is a great reflection of what Infiniti represents on land: a bold alloy of performance, individual style and opportunities. We are very glad to be able to help such a world’s first innovation,” sales director of Infiniti Hungary, Ákos Kovács said.

As confirmed by Géza Soponyai, he would like to obtain international patent for his innovation and, be the proud owner of the fastest sailboat in Hungary. The new design will be first challenged at the Blue Ribbon Regatta, the most prestigious event of the Hungarian sailing life. Organized for the 43rd time in Lake Balaton, the competition is the longest competition for big sailboats in Europe, where sailors shall do approximately 200 km in the shortest time. The official record is 10 hours 40 minutes.

The newly developed wing will be mounted to a Nautic 12 Racer type racing boat called Avatar. Following land trials the boat will be set afloat in Lake Balaton, where it will definitely attract people's attention. The wing will rise 19 meters high, and occupy 3 meters when collapsed. Total width will be 4 meter 80 cm, while it weights only 150 kg due to the carbon-fibre technology. It is comprised of 14 pieces of 1 meter 20 cm wide sections – this enables collapsing and precise adjustment. The wing is covered with a super strong plastic foil.

The wing will bear Infiniti logos on its sides, so that everyone will see that it is one of the most innovative boats of the world – and not only because of its speed.

Monaco Grand Prix 2011 - Practice Press Release

Monaco Grand Prix 2011 - Thursday Practice Press Release

Car 1 SEBASTIAN VETTEL
1st Practice P1, 2nd Practice P5

"It's been positive so far. Both tyres are working well and seem to be lasting, which is important. We will see how the conditions are on Sunday, but the super soft tyre seems to be the preferred one for qualifying. It seems to be quicker and you can extract more lap time out of it. I had a good feeling straight away in the car; it's fun driving around here; it's a different track and it's quite bumpy and rough. I brushed the wall after three laps, so hopefully that's that done for the weekend! The car looks competitive, but everyone is very close to each other, so it looks tight."

Car 2 MARK WEBBER
1st Practice P-, 2nd Practice P8

"I had a gear selection issue this morning, which meant I lost some lap time, otherwise it wasn't too bad. This afternoon was always going to be the case where you're going out a little bit behind, but we still got a lot of good information. It's easy to get out there and try and get to where you should be and make mistakes, but we got the information and have a lot to go through. We should be alright by Saturday. We will get back into the groove on Saturday and recover the weekend."

INFINITI'S THIRD CENTRE OPENS IN SWITZERLAND

  • A geographically ideally located Infiniti Centre
  •  Available showroom space of more than 400 m².
  • A common architecture and interior design to all Infiniti Centres in Europe, comparable to a luxury boutique hotel
  •  A tailored atmosphere for a highly-distinguished model lineup
  • The next Infiniti Centre in Switzerland will open in Lausanne in the second half of 2012
Infiniti Centre Basel opens today at Landstrasse 23, 4304 Kaiseraugst. The Centre is conveniently situated, easily accessible from the A2 motorway, only a ten-minute drive from Basel town centre and Liestal and a twenty minute drive from Frick. A perfect location to provide customers with a large, welcoming and convenient showroom.

With showroom space of more than 400 m², this centre and his dedicated workshop complements two existing centres, opened in 2009 in Zurich and Geneva. It is in keeping with other European Centres with its large windows and modern, luxurious interior. Designed according to the Infiniti Retail Environment Design Initiative (IREDI), the sales area has been thought out in the aim of creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Customers entering the Basel Centre will be able to appreciate Infiniti's lineup: Infiniti G in its three versions: sedan, coupe and cabrio; Infiniti M luxury sedan; EX coupe crossover; FX, the brand's iconic performance crossover.

The experience of purchasing a vehicle has been redefined by a concept which constitutes the "DNA" of the brand: the "Total Ownership Experience", which recognises and values the customer. This is the promise that purchasing an Infiniti will always be a stress-free experience in a modern, welcoming environment.

Everything has been worked out perfectly for customers to move in this elegant, modern environment. For example, a state-of-the-art, high definition screen, known as i-View, is available to customers to help in their selection of model and equipment. Customers can also admire Infiniti's full model range from a central lounge space in the showroom and so benefit from the calm, "Japanese-like" atmosphere of an Infiniti Centre.

INFINITI ANNOUNCES FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPION AS GLOBAL AMBASSADOR

INFINITI ANNOUNCES FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPION SEBASTIAN VETTEL AS GLOBAL BRAND AMBASSADOR

Infiniti, the luxury car manufacturer from Japan, today announces it has signed Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel as its first ever Global Brand Ambassador.

The collaboration with Sebastian Vettel comes two months after Infiniti announced a major partnership with the Red Bull Racing team. The 23 year-old F1 star will be taking an active role in raising the profile of the Infiniti brand and its products during race weekends and at selected events linked to Infiniti’s business and product programs.

From the start of the 2011 Formula One season, Infiniti has joined as a major partner of the Red Bull Racing team and features prominently on the race-winning RB7 driven by Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Like many in the Red Bull Racing team, Sebastian has been driving products from the Infiniti range, both as his personal car but also at the different races around the world.

Commenting on his new global role, Sebastian Vettel said: "Since our first contact with Infiniti I liked their cars. A car can impress you in two ways: its looks and its handling. After I had the chance to test some cars in the range I became a big fan. They are comfortable as well as sporty when you ask for it. I am sure we as a team and myself can benefit a lot from the experience of Infiniti and I am very much looking forward to our partnership in the future."

Simon Sproule, CVP Global Marketing Communications, Nissan Motor Company added: "Red Bull Racing have demonstrated over the course of their short history in F1 that they are a great challenger brand, unafraid of taking their own approach to creating a winning team. At the core of this emergence has been the inspired performance of Sebastian Vettel. As we developed the partnership with the team, so it was a natural progression to also work more closely with Sebastian and today we formally welcome him to the Infiniti team"

Infiniti to present Z4 rival in Geneva?

Infiniti Etherea Concept
Infiniti Etherea Concept
At this year's Geneva Motor Show, Infiniti took the wraps off its Etherea concept, showing its vision for a future premium hatchback. Now reports from across the pond suggest that the premium Nissan division could be preparing to unveil something decidedly sportier at next year's Swiss expo.

The report comes from Auto Express, and it suggests that the new sportscar will be targeted at the likes of the BMW Z4 and Audi TT, yet slot in below the G37 Coupe in the company's lineup. A two-seater in front-engine, rear-drive configuration is being mooted for the project, leaving questions as to where such a model might fit in the corporate hierarchy vis-à-vis Nissan's 370Z.

No word on potential powertrains, but a hybrid setup could be part of the mix. Rumor has it that Lotus is being brought in to consult on the chassis setup - a role often taken up by the British sportscar-maker and engineering consultancy. Us? We can't help but wonder if this isn't where Red Bull Racing's expertise could be brought to bear as well.

2013 Infiniti JX Crossover Photo

Infiniti's EX and FX crossovers are a hoot to drive, but as showroom performers, they're the Microsoft Zunes of the automotive world. Crossovers like the Lexus RX and Acura MDX trounce the duo's combined sales by tremendous margins every month in the charts. The execs at Infiniti are well aware of this, and are preparing the three-row JX to properly mount an assault on the luxury-crossover market.

Through the garbage-bag garb of this prototype, we can make out an Infiniti grille that may even beat that of the M sedan for bulginess. The roofline of the car in the photo tops off a very clear two-box shape, and, based on this single image, it will look in profile like most of the other three-row crossovers on the market. There isn't a lot you can do to disguise seating for seven.

Infiniti Badge, Nissan Roots
Unlike the rest of the current Infiniti lineup, which depends on just two rear-drive-based platforms-one for the G, M, EX, and FX, and a second for the QX-the JX will borrow a front-drive-based Nissan platform. (Our guess is the architecture from the Altima and Murano.) The bosses at Nissan and Infiniti haven't yet spoken to the degree of differentiation between the JX and any Nissan siblings, but we expect the Infiniti to be something more than simply a stretched and rebadged Murano.

As we previously reported, Nissan has filed paperwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office to trademark JX20, JX25, JX25h, and JX30. Which-if any-of these badges will one day adorn JX crossovers on the road is difficult to say. Infiniti's current naming convention indicates the engine displacement in liters multiplied by ten, and we have a hard time believing the company would sell a three-row crossover SUV with a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter engine-at least in the States. What's more, Nissan doesn't even have a 3.0-liter engine in the parts bin right now, save a diesel six offered in a few Renaults. The JX will most likely receive Nissan's ubiquitous 3.5-liter VQ V-6, which produces in the neighborhood of 290 hp in most of its front-wheel-drive applications. Given Nissan's proclivity for rubber-band transmissions, a CVT may be the only transmission on offer.

That's where the speculation ends. In showing off its sketch in New York, Infiniti laid out its timeline for the JX: It will show a concept version at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August, and follow that with a production vehicle at the L.A. auto show in November. Expect more information as those dates near.

Japanese Car Design... could this be a new G Coupe design?

A while back, Autocar reported that the new Nissan Skyline (earlier post), aka Infiniti G, has already been shown to the management. Now, a Japanse magazine has published the rendering shown, claiming that a hybrid version will be available, along with diesel engines supplied by Mercedes-Benz.

The new model is expected to launched either at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, or at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show.

Nissan and Infiniti - NISSAN TEAMS WITH CARFAX TO HELP CONSUMERS IDENTIFY OPEN RECALLS

NISSAN TEAMS WITH CARFAX TO HELP CONSUMERS IDENTIFY OPEN RECALLS

In an effort to provide used-car shoppers with improved access to information on open safety and emissions recalls, Nissan North America (NNA) today announced it will begin sharing this information for Nissan and Infiniti vehicles with Carfax.

By providing vehicle identification numbers (VINs) with open recalls to Carfax, NNA is working to ensure that customers can access this information through a convenient third-party database. Updated VINs will be provided to Carfax on a weekly basis and will enhance recall campaign awareness and encourage campaign repair completion.

"We strive to have recall campaign work completed in a timely fashion" said John Spoon, vice president, Parts and Service, NNA. "By working with Carfax we are making it easier for customers to determine if a vehicle has an open campaign and encouraging campaign service completion."

Millions of used car buyers and sellers every year rely on Carfax Vehicle History Reports as part of their used-car evaluations. Open recall campaign information reported to Carfax for Nissan and Infiniti vehicles will appear on Carfax Vehicle History Reports and also will be available free to consumers at recall.carfax.com.

"Carfax and Nissan North America are committed to keeping our roadways safe" said Larry Gamache, communications director at Carfax. "Adding Nissan and Infiniti to the list of manufacturers providing open recall campaign information to Carfax helps notify car owners and buyers and gets these cars into dealerships to be fixed."

2014 Infiniti Electric Sedan - Feature - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver

2014 Infiniti Electric Sedan

What it is:
A sleek luxury sedan designed as a dedicated EV.

Why it matters:
If EVs become a success, Infiniti will be a leader. The other luxury brands, after all, only make hybrids.

Platform:
The Infiniti will be built off the Nissan Leaf.

Powertrain: The Nissan Leaf motor, likely tuned to make between 130 and 150 horsepower, powered by lithium-ion batteries, driving the front wheels through a single-speed transaxle. The range should be better than the Leaf's real-world 80 miles.

Competition: Fisker Nina and Tesla Model S (if they are ever produced).

What might go wrong: The Infiniti EV will be a good-looking, well-appointed sedan, but the question remains whether more than a few customers will be ready to put up with a diminutive range, long charging hours, mediocre performance, and a huge price premium.

Estimated arrival and price: Mid-2013, more than $40,000.

Red Bull Racing to collaborate on Infiniti performance model

Infiniti and Red Bull

History and the contemporary automotive market hold no lack of examples of F1 teams translating their checkered flags into road cars. It's practically Ferrari's raison d'être, after all. McLaren's following suit, as well. Even Williams has collaborated with Renault on performance-oriented Clios, and now with Jaguar on the C-X75. But though each of these teams has claimed its share of championships and then some, these days it's Red Bull Racing that's on top. Trouble is - PlayStation fantasies notwithstanding - Red Bull doesn't make automobiles beyond a small batch of single-seaters for Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. That's where Infiniti comes in.

Powered by sister company Renault's engines, the Red Bull team this year features prominent sponsorship from Infiniti - a move which is expected to turn into a more comprehensive re-branding scheme in the future. In the meantime, Infiniti is keen to capitalize on its tie-in with the world champion F1 team (particularly since its only previous racing activities involved limited success in converting the Q45's V8 for Indy racing), and now reports are suggesting that a collaborative road car project between Red Bull Racing and Infiniti could be underway.

Citing the Renault Clio Williams as precedent, the Japanese luxury automaker is reportedly looking into making a performance-oriented version of one of its current products to go beyond the current Infiniti Performace Line. The G37 coupe would be the likeliest basis, but a substantial re-engineering effort could (unlike the Renault Williams tie-up) involve the F1 team's engineers to transfer their competencies to the road. Sources expect the project to be complete within two years from now.

INFINITI/NISSAN | Japan Relief Effort Continues

Two months after Japan's greatest natural disaster and the city of Rikuzentakata is still far from recovery.

Once home to 23,000 residents living near the Pacific Ocean, Rikuzentakata was devastated by a tsunami changing the lives of its citizens -- and the map -- forever.

Since the March 11 disaster, relief efforts have been continuing, but an estimated 60 percent of the population still resides in evacuation facilities.

For the U.N.'s World Food Programme, and other agencies deployed in Japan's Tohoku region, helping those still in need is paramount.

The WFP's logistic officer Mie Kataoka says the agency's efforts have focused on shelter and logistical support.

"We had decided that one of the things required is logistical support, in particular for the storage facilities and the pre-fabs as an office use. We came into this Tohoku area on the 27th of March and we started to go into the field to the locations to find out if it is really needed -- if they would be interested in using it. We have also asked what are their constraints, and apparently it turned ot to be they are really concerned about storage facilities, because at that peak moment a lot of items were coming in." she says.

The WFP contributed to a new pre-fabricated city hall opening this week, after the original building was destroyed like much of Rikuzentakata in the wave that came 6 kms in-land.

But local officals say much still needs to be done as over 13,000 citizens cannot return home.

Itaru Kanno, Section Chief of Rikuzentakata Fire Department, says "To secure living quarters is our top priority. The displaced have been in evacuation centers for two months without privacy."

The WFP received all-terrain vehicles from Nissan to support aid efforts, and Logistics Officer Nobuyoshi Kida says transport was essential in the days after the tsunami.

Nobuyuki Kida says "As soon as the operation started, many, many organizations as well as government officials, they started looking for vehicles like rent-a-cars, but everyone rushed into rent-a-cars and no more vehicles were available. Then, it was very, very good timing that Nissan company provided us vehicles, which was a very, very big help."

Over $300 million in corporate aid and resources has been pledged to Japan relief efforts, and millions of dollars from indivudals in Japan and overseas.

Efforts to help Rikuzentakata and other tsunami-hit locations will take months and possibly even years, but the WFP and other aid groups on the ground aim to help build a road to eventual recovery.

Spanish Grand Prix 2011: Red Bull Racing Pre-Race Press Release

Red Bull Racing Notice Board

"The circuit is great, the surface and layout are both very good for driving an F1 car on the limit. The last sector used to be very, very quick and now, for the last few years, we've had a slow chicane which breaks the rhythm of the lap up a little bit, but all in all I enjoy driving the car on this track. Of course I want to improve on my result in Turkey, so that means trying to finish on the top step. It would be nice to add to the special memories I have. It's one of the best races of the season in terms of atmosphere, because of the support Fernando gets. I love the drivers' parade when we see the fireworks in the crowd going off and they sing songs too, it is always entertaining."
 MARK

"We know the Barcelona circuit well from winter testing -- it should be suitable for our car and our plan is to get the best team result possible. Historically Barcelona is a circuit that is poor for overtaking, but with the DRS this will now be quite different. I like Spain and know Barcelona well from racing there -- it's a great modern city with lots of life and interesting architecture. I like the Spanish people and their culture, it's always a fantastic atmosphere at Spanish sporting events, such as the grand prix and football matches. This is the first race of two back to back events, I'm returning to Switzerland after Barcelona, so there will be a lot of travel."

Infiniti, the global luxury automotive brand from Japan, is supporting the Red Bull Racing Team this weekend by providing courtesy cars for this weekend's opening of the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

As part of its global marketing & technical partnership with Red Bull Racing in Formula One, Infiniti has high-profile branding on the RB7 racing car, drivers' and team's clothing and equipment. The common appearance of Red Bull Racing and Infiniti assures the visibility of the partnership, which was announced at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

This weekend, Infiniti Europe and Infiniti Center Vienna is providing the Red Bull Racing Team with three courtesy cars during the opening event of the new race track, the Red Bull Ring, in Spielberg, Austria. On the media day, May 14th, as well as on the open day, May 15th 2011, the drivers of the Red Bull Racing Team will use Infiniti cars for transportation to and from the circuit. World Champion Sebastian Vettel and his team mate Mark Webber will have the choice between the spectacular Infiniti G Convertible, an Infiniti M37 and the 4-wheel-drive version of the Infiniti G37. The Infiniti cars will be at their disposal throughout the weekend ensuring they experience Inspired Performance both on and off the track.

Andreas Sigl, Infiniti F1 Director, welcomes this opportunity: "The opening of the new Red Bull Ring is an important event - not only for Austria, but also beyond. This weekend, we are delighted to support Red Bull Racing at this opening event by placing our cars at their disposal. Both drivers use Infiniti's as their personal cars - Sebastian Vettel drives the Infiniti FX50, Mark Webber an Infiniti M37 - and we are very happy to support them by providing Infiniti cars during public events."

STILLEN Intercooled Supercharger System = over 500hp!

STILLEN VQ37 Supercharger System for the Infiniti G37

 515HP - 438WHP - 343LB/FT Torque (see ** notes below)

+155 Horsepower at the Wheels! @ 8 psi on 91 octane fuel (see ** notes below)

STILLEN is proud to offer the STILLEN supercharger system for the Nissan and Infiniti VQ37 (370Z/G37.) This supercharger system took over a year to develop and involves some revolutionary designs. This supercharger system is developed to offer the customer easy upgradability and installation without requiring a hood replacement to complete the installation! With this supercharger system we bump the power output to over 500 horsepower! With lots of room to grow! Some of the more noteworthy features of the supercharger are:

Air to water intercooler: By redesigning the intake manifold we were able to incorporate the intercooler inside the manifold, thus allowing us to cool the air charge immediately before the air enters the engine. Additionally, the front mounted heat exchanger does not block the airflow supplying cool air to other vital coolers such as the radiator, engine oil cooler, transmission cooler, power steering cooler or the A/C condenser. Because water is 4 times more efficient at dissipating heat than air, we are able to utilize a more compact heat exchanger to cool the water.

Air to water intercooling is not the only benefit of the redesigned intake manifold. By increasing the runner length we are able to increase torque. Also, the large volume of the intake manifold allows the engine to draw from a much larger (than factory) air source.

Vortech V3 supercharger: This supercharger system incorporates the Vortech V3 self-lubricating supercharger system. With a completely sealed supercharger system there is no concern of having to run additional oil lines or anything like that. Also, the V3 supercharger is a much quieter system than previous models. The major features to the Vortech supercharger are the ease of upgrading power later on, as well as the installation without having to modify the hood!

To handle the fuel management for the supercharger system STILLEN has gone directly to the ECU. By changing out to larger injectors and fuel pump (supplied in complete kit) STILLEN is able to take control of the factory ECU and re-map it for the boosted application. This tuning method is handled via reflash using the UPrev software tuned by STILLEN engineers. This supercharger system comes in two options. Either fully tuned (most popular) or Tuner. The tuner kit does not come with any fuel management and comes with no warranty expressed or implied.

STILLEN is proud to offer an optionally available engine/drivetrain warranty for the STILLEN Supercharger! This policy covers the vehicle through 3 years / 36,000 miles with $8,000 of total coverage ($5,000 engine / $3,000 driveline). Please contact your STILLEN representative for more information and specifics on this program.

At your Seattle Infiniti dealer, Kuni Westside Infiniti, we are fully capable and excited to instal this supercharger on your Infiniti G37!

Kuni Westside Infiniti Review on DealerRater.com

Review of Seattle Infiniti Dealership, Kuni Westside Infiniti In Lynnwood WA:

Excellent customer experience. I am the type of personality that dreads time at the car dealership since most dealers tend to be high-pressure, overbearing situations. Kuni is exactly what a car buying experience should be. Very friendly staff, informative and willing to do the little extras for you. Very candid conversations about price and their revenue model. They're not interested in having you as a one-time customer but rather would prefer to keep you satisfied with their service and keep you as a life-long customer...something all businesses should strive for. Will and already have recommended for friends and family.

Nissan/Infiniti - Japan Factories Gear Up for Recovery

Japan Factories Gear Up for Recovery At Nissan factories across Japan, production is increasing as the automaker and country recover further.

After the tragic events of March 11, Nissan's car output in Japan fell 52.4 percent and its exports 12.5 percent during the month, although all factories are now back on line.

Compared to Toyota and Honda whose March output each fell about 62 percent, Nissan's decline was not as great, but all Japanese automakers have been hit by limited parts access. In Tochigi, the largest of the three main assembly plants where Nissan makes GT-Rs, Infiniti Ms and other models, factory lights are back on and production is gearing up.

The plant, located about 100 km, or 62 miles, north of Tokyo, began making cars in 1971, and produces many top sports and luxury vehicles.

Hiromi Takaoka, General Manager at Nissan Tochigi Plant said, "Everything is fixed and ready now. It is just an issue of parts supply that is holding us back from full production. If everything is prepared, we are ready to resume production to 100 percent or even more. Through this earthquake, we have learned that everything is possible, if we join our forces together. Nothing is impossible, and we won't let this earthquake beat us."

Closer to the company's Yokohama headquarters is the Oppama plant, where more than 3,000 staff make up to 480,000 cars a year, including the zero-emission NISSAN Leaf.

On the western Japanese island of Kyushu, some 3,600 staff make Serenas, Muranos and other vehicles.

Yukinobu Kodama, General Manager at Nissan Kyushu Plant said, "In Kyushu there was no direct damage to our facility. However, production was suspended because the parts supply was halted. Operations resumed April 13. We'll do our utmost to be back on full production, so that we can deliver the highest quality cars to those customers waiting all over the world"

Despite the earthquake and tsunami, global Nissan production still hit an all-time high in the last business year, rising 24.5 percent to 4.21 million units.

Japanese output alone rose 4.6 percent to hit 1.07 million cars, as demand for the Juke, Rogue and Infiniti QX56 took off.

As recovery takes hold in coming months, all Japan staff will be essential to meet demand, particualrly from the quake-sticken Tohoku region in Japan.

Estimates are that up to 10 percent of cars in prefectures such as Miyagi have been damaged or destroyed in the wake of the disaster, raising the need for new production ahead.

Infiniti goes rallying in Spain with G37 safety car

Infiniti G37 Coupe S safety car

Infiniti is no stranger to motorsports. The Japanese luxury marque supplied engines to the Indy Racing League in the late 90s, and recently launched a sponsorship deal with the World Champion Red Bull Racing team in Formula One (which runs sister-company Renault's engines). But rallying is new territory for the Nissan premium division.

Now before you let your imagination run wild, bear in mind that the G37 coupe you see here is not actually competing in any rally events. It is, however, being used as a safety car for the Spanish Rally Championship.

For the task, the G37 Coupe S dubbed "Work Car Zero" has been outfitted with roll-bar, dampers, brakes, bucket seats and harnesses, fire-suppression system, communications equipment and special lighting. Otherwise, it's pretty much bone stock (save for the garish paint scheme).

Follow the jump for all the details in the press release and scope out the images in the high-res gallery below for a closer look.

Infiniti confirms plans to launch in Australia

Infinity M37

Infiniti has big plans to expand beyond North America, and Drive reports that the Japanese luxury automaker intends to include Australia in its expansion. The site says that officials at Nissan have officially announced that Infiniti would head Down Under by September 2012, adding that the brand would start off with three stand-alone dealerships in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

When those dealerships launch, there will only be three Infiniti products from which to choose. The G37 coupe and convertible, the M sedan and the FX crossover were chosen in part because of their freshness in the market. Infiniti has reportedly decided against exporting the high volume G37 sedan to Australia, opting instead to wait until the next generation model goes prime-time. The Australians will be able to choose from the same 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 options we have here in the States, and they'll also be able to pick a 3.0-liter diesel that we aren't afforded.

The folks at Infiniti also hinted at their strategy for the brand. Infiniti brand GM Kevin Snell reportedly told the press at a launch event that the brand wouldn't try to be the "cheapest" make Down Under, adding that Infiniti models are often better-equipped than the competition from Europe.

Infiniti gets JX three-row crossover

infiniti jx concept sketch
Infiniti JX concept sketch - Click above for high-res image

If the calendar shows that a major auto show is upon us, that means it's time for automakers to release teaser images and video. Since the 2011 New York Auto Show is about to open its doors, Infiniti has taken the opportunity to release a hazy sketch of a vehicle to be revealed... at Pebble Beach?

Called the JX, this luxury crossover teases with talk of three-row seating and flowing lines. Infiniti is mum on the details (diminutive press released posted after the jump) but we're going to bet that this isn't the J30 reborn. Crossovers are still a hot commodity, so Infiniti is looking to add another one to its current lineup.

More details will be available when the concept version is shown at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We do know, however, that Infiniti trademarked the names JX20, JX25, JX25h and JX30. This means there could be a wide range of available engines, but it also means Infiniti could be taking the proper precautions to ensure the name they want is available once a powertrain is chosen. The production version will bow at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show before heading to dealer showrooms in the spring of 2012, as a 2013 model.
